The expansion work on National Highway 217 in the northern province of Thanh Hoa was kicked off on June 25.

This is part of the first phase of the second Northern Greater Mekong Sub-Region (GMS) Transport Network Improvement Project.

The expansion section covers a length of 88km at a cost of US$97.4 million with $75 million coming from the ADB. Work is expected to finish by 2016.

National Highway 217 is part of the northeastern corridor of GMS, linking the northeastern region of Laos with the North of Vietnam.

The upgrade will help grow economic potential along the northeastern corridor, connect Laos’ northeastern region with Nghi Son seaport in Thanh Hoa province, and improve the lives of local people.
