The central provinces of the country are facing severe drought conditions for the last one month.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Quang Tri Province, thousands of hectares of rice crops and vegetables are in dire need of irrigation.
Adding to the woes, the Vi Yen Dyke has broken-down, letting salination encroach further into the Thach Han River, making even the river water far too polluted for watering parched rice fields.
Nguyen Dinh Hai, deputy director of the Irrigation Company in Quang Nam Province said that water levels in the Vu Gia and Thu Bon rivers have gone down by 1.2-1.5 meters since last year.
The saline concentration has badly affected thousands of hectares of summer-autumn rice crops in Dien Ban, Dai Loc, Duy Xuyen Districts and Hoi An town.
The Dong Nghe reservoir in Hoa Khuong Commune of Hoa Vang District, which provides water to 700 hectares of rice crops, vegetables and seafood farming areas, is also slowly depleting.
