The Steering Centre for the Urban Flood Control Programme in Ho Chi Minh City on June 4 discussed with domestic and foreign experts the construction of the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal wastewater treatment system under the second phase of the Environment Sanitation Project in the Canal Basin.
A representative from the Steering Centre said that the project is expected to cost about US$470 million and complete by 2019.
HCMC leaders are negotiating with the World Bank for a loan to implement the second phase of the project.
The first phase of the project, expected to complete by June 30, 2012, implemented in Districts 1, 3, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan and Tan Binh cost $317 million, including $294 million in ODA funds from global lenders and the remaining from the city budget.
In the second phase, the city plans to relocate more than 7,000 households living along the canal; dredge mud from the canal; and improve water flow and the environment around the canal.
The wastewater will be collected and treated at a wastewater treatment plant in Thanh My Loi Ward of District 2.
In addition, the project aims to eliminate about 33 kilometres of highly vulnerable flood area along the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal in District 7.
