HCMC Police Department arrested three people suspected of scamming customers on an electronic goods site on April 23.
The suspects include Phung Dinh Tan, 37, Nguyen Tan Chuong, 24, and Nguyen Thi Dieu Minh, 23.
Tan is accused of identity fraud for using a false identification card he bought from a pawnshop in December 2012 to open an account at Dong A Bank in District 10, according to police reports. The identification card belonged to Vu Phan Quoc Viet.
Tan and Chuong collaborated to create a scamming electronic products website www.iphonehot.net. Products offered were of famous brands such as Apple, Samsung, Sony, and Canon with discounts of up to 40 percent.
The culprits are accused of either not delivering goods or delivering cheap secondhand products from China.
They stole VND 706 million from customers on the site. Tan received two-thirds while Chuong received one-third of the total.
Minh received VND 5 million per month to work as a telephone operator.
Police Department for High-Tech Crime Prevention under the Ministry of Public Security and District 10 Police raided their house at 575 Cach Mang Thang Tam, Ward 15. The men were caught operating the scam.
They also confiscated several ATM cards, including Vu Phan Quoc Viet’s identification card.
Customers who have purchased items on the site can notify Tran The Anh, official from HCMC Police Department, at 324 Hoa Hung, Ward 13, District 10 or call (08) 38623638 to file a claim.
