Can Tho police on March 6 arrested three people for stealing steel piles being used to build wave breakers for the Can Tho Bridge project, said Police Captain Huynh Van Huong on March 10.
The three individuals included Bui Duc Ai, a Can Tho Bridge project worker; Nguyen Thai Thoan, a manager of the project; and Nguyen Ngoc Minh, a driver; all from Ha Tinh Province.
The group was caught using a 600-ton loading barge to transport steel piles from Vinh Long shore to a port at Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City.
Police are also investigating seven other individuals found working on the barge when the three were caught.
Ai, Thoan and Minh admitted to stealing 16 steel piles measuring 8-12 meters in length and weighing a total of 600 kilograms each.
Police seized the materials weighing a total of around 10 tons as well as 190 tons of iron.
