Tet road toll reaches 300

Four hundred road accidents have occurred during the Tet holiday from February 13-19 nationwide, killing nearly 300 people and injuring more than 400, according to preliminary statistics released by the Railway, Road Police Department under the Ministry of Security.

Almost all victims of the holiday road accidents were found to have alcohol in their blood.

No motorbike races were reported during this Tet, but road accidents were up by 100 over last year’s figure.

Most of the motorbikes involved in the accidents were carrying more than the regulated two persons, while many of those injured or killed were not wearing helmets.

In the first five days of the festival, 13 road accidents were reported in Hanoi, with 11 deaths and three injuries.

In Ho Chi Minh City, almost 925 road accident victims were taken to hospitals in the first three days of the festival. 

The central province of Thua Thien-Hue reported its holiday road toll reached 10 in the first four days of Tet, while the authorities in the central province of Quang Ngai reported seven road deaths and nine injuries.
