Scholarships granted to medical students

The 14th Nguyen Van Huong scholarships were granted at a ceremony organised by Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper at the Pham Ngoc Thanh University of Medicine on April 20, attended by Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, deputy secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

Altogether, 100 scholarships worth VND570 million were given away to medical students, of which 40 scholarships worth VND6 million each went to university students and 20 scholarships worth VND4 million each to high school students of HCMC University of Medicine and the Pham Ngoc Thanh University of Medicine.

30 scholarships worth VND5million each, donated by Doctor Ta Trung Quac, were also given to medical students of the Tu Du Hospital.

Ten scholarships, donated by Pharma Vietnam Company, worth VND5 million each, went to young doctors studying in Dong Thap and Binh Thuan Provinces.

In addition, the scholarships committee also provided VND50 million for midwives in rural areas.

At the ceremony, Nguyen Tan Phong, deputy chief of SGGP reviewed 14 years of growth and development of the Nguyen Van Huong Scholarships. Since its establishment, the scholarships have received support from individuals working in and outside the medical profession, and have also generated a lot of attention from the medical sector.

Thanks to the support from the fund, hundreds of medical students have completed their studies and are now making great contributions to the public healthcare services in the country, sometimes working in difficult conditions in remote and isolated areas, said Nguyen Tan Phong, deputy chief of SGGP.

Over the years, individuals and organisations have supported the fund which began with an initial donation of VND40 million by Doctor Nguyen Van Huong.

Attending the ceremony were representatives from SGGP Newspaper, the HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the HCMC Department of Health and 100 students who received scholarships this year.
