At the meeting with Chau at the Hanoi - Vietnam National University, where he studied, Professor Mai Trong Thuan, director of the university, invited Chau to become a member of the university’s strategic advisory board.

Hanoi – Vietnam National University wants Chau, who is a professor at the University of Chicago, to help form a bridge between the prestigious American institution and the university.

Chau is now a potential candidate for the world’s most prestigious mathematic Fields Award, which will be announced at the 26th International Congress of Mathematics in Hyderabad, India on August 19.

Chau said that if he has the honor of winning the Fields Award, he would donate all his prize money to poor Vietnamese students.

Ngo Bao Chau was born in 1972. He majored in mathematics at Hanoi University of Natural Sciences.

In 1988, Chau won the gold medal at the International Mathematics Olympiad in Australia. In 1989, he won another gold medal at the International Mathematics Olympiad in Germany.

Chau defended his doctoral dissertation in France when he was just 25.
