Police in the northern province of Quang Ninh on December 10 issued an arrest warrant for Nguyen Duy Vuong, Director of 29 Hanoi Import and Export Joint Stock Company, and manufacturer of the deadly spurious liquor brand that killed five people.
Police also arrested Tran Xuan Manh and Dang Van Canh, both of who were responsible for manufacturing of the liquor in the company.
Before, police had called the three people for questioning. At the police station, Vuong could only present a business license but no documents for food safety and hygiene or product quality certificates.
Worse still, the company violated these regulations several times but had received only a light punishment.
Mai Thi Hong Hanh, Deputy Inspector of the Department of Health in Hanoi, said that sample tests of the liquor showed that methanol contents were 2,950 times higher than acceptable limits.
According to Nguyen Thi Nhu Mai, Deputy Chief of the Department of Industry and Trade in Hanoi, since 2009 concerned agencies have issued administrative fines on 29 Hanoi Import and Export Joint Stock Company for selling alcohol products without license, employees not trained in food safety and hygiene, and quality of liquor not being the same as stated on the packaging.
