The first island district meeting the standards is Co To Island in the northern province of Quang Ninh.

Previously, citizens and visitors must take eight to nine hours to travel over 56 nautical miles to reach Phu Quy Island. Modern boats now reduce travel time by half.

Phu Quy has used capital source from the province, the district and residential communities for building necessary infrastructure works to become a new rural district.

Fishing is considered to be the key industry of the district with 123 teams of fishing boats, one fishery trade union, 40 cooperatives and 87 high speed vessels purchasing seafood at sea.

One hundred percent of households in the island are now supplied with electricity. Clean water under national standards has been provided to 80 percent households and nearly 90 percent of traffic network have been concreted or tarmacked.

Chairman of the district People’s Committee Ta Minh Nhut said that local authorities would maintain and improve new rural standards in communes.
