People relieved in central region as floodwaters slowly recede

As per reports on Tuesday, floods have left 12 dead and three others missing. Quang Binh Province reported four deaths and Quang Tri Province five. Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam and Da Nang have each lost one resident.

Heavy prolonged rainfall and excessive flooding also injured 14 people, damaged nearly 87,000 houses and flooded over 5,000 hectares of rice and vegetable crops.

By Tuesday afternoon, floodwaters were seen to be slowly retreating. Flood levels remained above level 3 at about 0.6 meters on the Kien Giang River in Le Thuy District. 19,000 households in the vicinity were still isolated by floodwaters.

Meanwhile, 11,000 households were cut off by floodwaters in Quang Ninh District. The district has dispatched hundreds of instant noodle packages to worst hit communes and 33 tons of rice to the Van Kieu ethnic minority people in Truong Son Commune.

The Red Cross Association in Quang Binh Province has transported 100,000 tablets for purifying drinking water. One tablet can purify 20 liters of water and make it fit for consumption in areas where there is extreme drinking water scarcity. 700 hundred instant noodle packages have also been transported to Quang Ninh, Le Thuy, Minh Hoa and Tuyen Hoa Districts.

Vinh Linh District in Quang Tri Province is concentrating on fortifying some dyke sections which were breached during the flooding, consolidating embankment areas along Cua Tung Beach and clearing landslide debris from traffic routes in Vinh Son and Vinh O Communes.

Thousands of people in Thua Thien-Hue Province are relieved to return to their homes to begin cleaning-up work. Local people helped environment workers to clear garbage and mud that is strewn on roads in Hue City.

Meanwhile, authorities have estimated the total financial loss caused by flooding in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap to be around VND904 billion (US$43 million).

According to the province’s Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention, the highest amount of damage has been caused to the entire road infrastructure, estimated to reach about VND399 billion.

Another landslide occurred along a 45m stretch in Thay Cai Ditch in Tan Binh Commune of Thanh Binh District on Tuesday morning, forcing two households to flee their homes.

According to the committee, the landslide status has been marked at the highest red level danger mark in the island communes of Thanh Binh and Hong Ngu Districts.

So far in Dong Thap, over 21,000 houses have been inundated and 64 have collapsed. Individuals and organizations have donated cash and relief items worth VND2.4 billion ($114,000) to over 8,700 households in the province.
