In 2000, the figure of farming laborers was 140,045 accounting for 5.1 percent of total laborers in the city. While in 2011, it decreased to 125,254 people accounting for 3.9 percent and the figure were 72,487 and 43,355 in 2015 and 2016 respectively
Also as per the survey, the number of households working in agricultural, fishery and forestry sector in HCMC was 25,414 as of July 1, 2016 accounting for 6.8 percent compared to the number in countryside districts.
The figure of farming households in outlying districts Cu Chi, Can Gio, Nha Be, Hoc Mon and Binh Chanh is 22,541 accounting for 6 percent compared to farming households in rural regions. Accordingly, it saw a gradual reduction in five past years in five districts.
This showed a transfer in career structure in countryside areas in the city. Many households in suburbs transferred working from agricultural- fishery- forestry sectors to commercial and service sector.
