Korean firm workers strike for bonus, other demands

Five hundred workers at Korean-owned DongBang Textile Co Ltd in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 12 struck work January 14 to protest against the constant increase in their work hours and failure to announce Tet (lunar New Year) bonuses yet.

They also demanded payment of their salaries on February 10, four days before New Year, and a wage increase of VND160,000 rather than the VND140,000 the company has announced.

The striking workers complained that the company asked them to work more shifts without first seeking their consent, gave them poor food, and failed to pay for their annual leave or for work they did on Sundays.

The company’s managers agreed to discuss with workers before lengthening shifts and pay them their salaries on February 10 and compensate them for paid leave.

But the managers threatened not to pay the Tet bonus if the workers continue to strike work.
