HCMC strives to reduce 5 percent fatal work accidents

Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Deputy Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thu has signed a program of safety work accidents for the period 2016-2020.

The program aims to improve work condition, labor environment pollution and prevent workplace accidents and diseases, look after laborers’ health condition, and raise laborers’ awareness of law on work safety & the protection of enterprises’ asset contributing to the city’s sustainable growth.

As per the program, the city set the goals to reduce annual average workplace accidents by 5 percent with the vision by 2020; over half of laborers in dangerous jobs will have medical check-up for occupational illnesses; 70 percent of giant enterprises and 30 percent of small –and-medium businesses will be monitored labor environment; an increase of 200 small-and-medium enterprises will implement work safety and hygiene system.

Above all, most people suffering workplace accidents and illnesses in the city will receive treatment and most of workplace accidents will be investigated.

The results of the national on work safety and hygiene program in the period 2011-2015 showed that the projects communicated all regulations of work safety gradually raising employees and employers’ awareness to curb fatal accidents in workplace.

However, the rate of work accidents in the period fluctuated from 1.45 percent to 1.96 percent; of which, fatal accidents accounted for 0.12 percent to 0.16 percent. There was a slight reduction of 20 percent in the number of accidents in 2015 compared to 2011.

Still, many workplace accidents are seen in industrial production, construction, and services; accordingly it can not achieve the target of reduction of 5 percent in these sectors.

By 2020, the city must correctly evaluate workplace accidents, occupational illnesses. The city needs to increase nformation of regulation amongst employees and employers as well as tighten control of implementation of policies and work environment and safety.
