The month-long event aims to celebrate the Red Cross and Red Crescent Day (May 8) titled “Everywhere for everyone”.
At the ceremony, the HCMC Red Cross Society calls on members and volunteers to strengthen research people who are truly disadvantaged and provide direct support; and mobilize sponsors to participate in the campaign.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice President of Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS) Tran Thi Hong An highly appreciated active participation of the members and volunteers of the HCMC Red Cross Society in the event.
She asked the HCMC Red Cross Society to continue enhancing humanitarian supporting activities effectively, promoting humanitarian values and calling on people and resources to join in the society’s activities to help disadvantaged and vulnerable people in the country.

Head of Mission in Vietnam at the International Committee of the Red Cross Gianni Volpin said that with about 4 million volunteers across the country, the VRCS has gained great achievements, such as the significant program called “Tet for the poor and Agent Orange victims”. Launched in 1999, the annual art program raising fund for the poor and Agent Orange/dioxin victims had presented millions of Tet gifts for the poor and Agent Orange/dioxin victims on the Lunar New Year.
The VRCS is also a pioneer unit who has launched blood donation campaigns supporting blood banks and patients throughout the country. The campaign has contributed in raising social responsibility among individuals and in the community, he added.
At the launching ceremony, the HCMC Red Cross Society raised more than VND42 billion. Additionally, a charity texting campaign has been also launched to collect money for poor fishermen. People can support the campaign by texting BD to 1407. Each SMS costs 18,000 VND (0.845 USD).
The Humanitarian Month runs till May 31.
