Police in the capital city arrested five people for betting on World Cup matches this week.
Investigators arrested Hoang Viet Anh at a coffee shop on Tue Tinh street for betting on a match between England and Slovenia via the internet June 23
Police seized VND44.6 million (US$2,400), four computers, one USB and seven mobile phones at the scene.
Expanding the investigation, police arrested four other people allegedly involved in the same gambling ring the next day. They are: Vu Linh Tri, Do Xuan Thanh, Nguyen Minh Cuong and Dao Duy Tung, all from Hanoi.
Police are continuing their investigating and inspecting links the arrested gamblers might have with other suspects in the northern provinces of Lao Cai and Bac Ninh.
The Ministry of Public Security said illegal gambling activities had been on the increasing Vietnam since 1996. People bet tens of billion of VND on every match during the World Cup, as well as during the Euro, British, German, Italian and Spanish champions’ leagues seasons.
