Environment Dept. asks Vedan to compensate over 1,200 households

A meeting was held March 24 in Vung Tau City to discuss compensation for 1,255 fish-farming families living near Thi Vai River who have suffered from pollution caused by Taiwanese MSG maker Vedan Vietnam.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province co-organized the meeting with the General Department of Environment, the Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Environment and Resources, and other relevant organizations.

Vedan has reportedly dumped large amounts of untreated wastewater into the Thi Vai River causing heavy pollution.  Fish farmers in the area say that as a result of the water contamination, their aquaculture businesses, which include catching and breeding fish, have suffered greatly since 2002.

During the meeting, the General Department of Environment asked Vedan to compensate affected households in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, Dong Nai Province and Ho Chi Minh City.
