City cycling heads suspended for wrong spendings

Head of the cycling section at the Ho Chi Minh City Culture, Sports and Tourism Department and the section’s head coach have been suspended following their wrong spending of the section’s fund.

Head of the cycling section at the Ho Chi Minh City Culture, Sports and Tourism Department and the section’s head coach have been suspended following their wrong spending of the section’s fund.

Mai Ba Hung, deputy director of the department, said the department has transferred document concerning the cycling head Phan Quy Bach and coach Tran Van Ung to the city inspectors.

“The department will impose official punishment after receiving official conclusion from the inspectors,” Hung said.

As of Saturday, Bach and Ung have returned VND240 million (US$11,600) lost from the fund. More than VND66 million of the money, which was the department’s support to cyclists in competitions, will be given to the cyclists.

The rest would be sent back to the city state budget. Bach had earlier asked for the money to invest in the city cycling activitites but used it wrongly.

The wrong spending was discovered earlier this month after cyclist Mai Nguyen Hung accidentially came across the department’s sponsorship decision and yet he and his teammates have received nothing.

Hung and other cyclists said the decision has never been published to them.
