The VBS's Executive Council Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon praised great contribution of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc to the VBS and the Buddhist struggle movement in 1963 against a backdrop of religious oppression.
Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, Deputy Patriarch of the VBS Patronage Council, gave a commemorative speech of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc and called on Buddhist monks and nuns to develop VBS and traditional patriotism.
Thich Quang Duc burned himself to death in Sai Gon on June 11, 1963 to protest against the the South Vietnamese regime’s oppression of Buddhists.
The Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc Memorial is located at the intersection of Cach Mang Thang Tam and Nguyen Dinh Chieu streets in District 3. It is a destination for local and foreign visitors to recall the monk's patriotism, determination to fight against oppression and willingness to die for his country's independence and unification.
