The ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) workshop on ocean plastic waste management was opened in coastal city of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa province yesterday.

The three- day workshop was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam and the United States and Thailand counterangencies, attracting more than 90 delegates, according to the agreements at the 25th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting in Singapore in August, 2018. 

Speaking at the event, Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' ASEAN Department Mr. Vu Ho said that Vietnam realized the importance of oceans and marine resources, so state management systems on the sea and the islands were built. 

Additionally, the Vietnamese Government has developed the national action plan for ocean plastic waste management, learnt development of management policies related to plastic pollution on sea.

According to research results, about 8 million tons of plastic waste have been released to the ocean annually. Therefore, plastic waste treatment on sea needs to have urgent actions, mutual cooperations of many countries and regions to achieve consistency towards effective and sustainable solutions.

The workshop will also discuss ways to ensure sustainable fisheries for food security in the ASEAN region.
