Lieutenant Do Manh Linh, 28, deputy head of a flying squad company in Tan Lac district, northern province of Hoa Binh, was killed while taking part in the arrest of a suspected drug trafficker on the evening of May 18th.

The incident occurred in the northern province of Hoa Binh, where the police officers' vehicle was hit by a car driven by an alleged drug trafficker. Before that, a joint police force was posted on National Highway 6 in Phong Phu Commune, Tan Lac District, on the evening of May 18 to capture Trang A Chu, a suspect member of a large-scale drug trafficking ring.

At 19 pm, as a suspicious Toyota Prado approached, the police signaled it to stop. The car, however, deliberately crashed into the police’s cars and seriously injured Linh and sergeant major Hoang Minh Thanh, 23.

After being taken to Tan Lac hospital, Lieutenant Do Manh Linh from the Ministry of Public Security's Drugs Crime Investigation Department died on 1:30 am of May 19th,  while his colleague, major sergeant Hoang Minh Thanh still remains under medical treatment.

The police officers were trying to stop the suspected car, which was carrying 50 packages of heroin, two packages of ecstasy and VND70 million (US$3,300) in cash, on a stretch of National Highway No 6.

Chu then got out of the car and attempted suicide by hitting himself in the temple with a flash light and using a piece of broken glass from the flash light to cut his wrist. However, the police were able to control him.

On searching Chu’s car, the policemen found 50 heroin cakes, two packages of ecstasy and VND70 million (nearly US$3,450) in cash.
