According to Ericsson Corp., in the next 6 years, the total global quantity of 5G subscribers is estimated to reach 2.6 billion, with the service coverage of 65 percent of the world population. This technology is wholeheartedly supported by terminal equipment manufacturers and a large number of promising applications. In addition, B2B transactions via 5G might reach around US$700 million.
In Vietnam, in August 2019, Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group successfully installed the infrastructure for the first 5G station in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). On September 21 this year, Viettel also introduced the Internet of Things facilities in this city.
However, Viettel’s 5G technology has still been provided around District 10 of HCMC only.
It is expected that 2020 will be the year that this technology is more widely commercialized.
Similar to Viettel, MobiFone has the plan to pilot 5G technology in 12 public spots and larks in District 1 and a part of the new urban area in District 7 of HCMC. It will pilot 5G technology free of charge so that its customers can experience enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) for their online music listening, film watching, and game playing.
Vietnamese mobile network providers are now carefully calculating the cost of 5G-related services to introduce the most reasonable subscription fees.
