Nguyen Hue Flower Street received nearly one million domestic and foreign visitors since it opened to the public seven days ago.
The theme this year was ‘New Heights’ which displayed more than 100,000 flowerpots with over 1,000 orchids. The theme reflected the enormous efforts made by the city to achieve higher growth economically, socially and politically.
The street will open to traffic on February 7.
As part of the Lunar New Year 2011 celebrations, Ho Chi Minh City had also organized a book street on Mac Thi Buoi Street in District 1, which attracted more than 150,000 visitors.
The theme of the book street was ‘Uoc mo’ (Dream), representing the people’s aspirations for the city. Many of the leading publishing houses in the city participated in this event. Publishing of e-books, books for the blind and literary meetings with famous poets and writers was also organized.
The city authorities chose 2011 as Youth Year and the Year for Children. Books for children were a special feature at the event. Other activities included displays of images of Uncle Ho, children, various newspapers, achievements made by the city, rare books, display of electronic books for the sight-impaired, poetry readings and author talks.
Visitors were able to read, buy, borrow or swap books. The event was aimed at encouraging people to read more and place greater emphasis and value on books and the habit of reading.
The book street was organized by the HCMC People’s Committee, the HCMC Department of Information and Communications and the HCMC Information & Communication Technology Center.
