The Vietnam Electricity (EVN) August 8 organized a ceremony to set off construction of Vinh Tan 2 thermal power plant, which will generate about 7.2 billion kwh each year to become the country largest one in terms of capacity, in the central province of Binh Thuan.

Capital totaling nearly VND23.5 trillion (US$1.2 billion) will be spent to build Vinh Tan 2 in Tuy Phong District. The plant’s two engine units will be operational by the end of 2013 and by the middle of the following year, respectively.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said that it is one of the key national projects for the 2011-2015 phase, marking a new developmental step in the progress of Vietnam’s electricity industry.
The same day, construction of Tan My irrigation system also began in the neighboring province of Ninh Thuan. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development invests in the project with VND3.8 trillion (US$200 million) from the Government’s bonds.
After completion in 2015, the system will provide water for dozens of thousands hectares of cultivation and production areas in Ninh Son, Bac Ai, and Ninh Hai districts and in Phan Rang-Thap Cham town.
The work will also provide water for industry and electricity production and will reduce floods for the low section areas.
