Vietnam wants to host ADB 2011 annual meeting

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has authorized the country’s State Bank Governor to send a letter to the Asian Development Bank to express Vietnam’s willingness to host the bank’s annual meeting next year.

The Government website said Mar. 26 that the State Bank would be responsible for working with the ADB in carrying out the task.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Finance and related government agencies are required to cooperate with the State Bank in this job, according to the website.

Vietnam was among the ADB’s founding members in 1966, but operations were suspended between 1979 and 1992, before resuming again in 1993.

The ADB has provided the country with various loans and grants to support its efforts to reduce poverty and bolster development. The bank has also financed a number of regional technical assistance projects for the Greater Mekong Sub-region, which includes Vietnam.
