Ground was broken January 13 for the US$1 billion Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park Project in Hai Phong City in the presence of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his visiting Singaporean counterpart, Lee Hsien Loong.
Located in Thuy Nguyen District, the park will spread over 1,566 hectares, with 507 ha earmarked for factories and the rest for an urban area with modern technical infrastructure, housing for 150,000 people, schools, green areas, and other facilities.
It is being developed by the Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park & Township Development Joint Stock Company.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Dung said he believed the project would be successful, generating thousands of jobs and enabling the development of the port city and the Hong (Red) River Delta in general.
The project investors must use advanced technologies, protect the environment, and ensure those whose lands they acquire would have a better life in resettlement areas, he said.
Work must proceed on schedule, he added.
The park and the other ones in Binh Duong and Bac Ninh Provinces are a significant symbol of the successful bilateral cooperation between Singapore and Vietnam, PM Lee said.
