Twenty-two dead, missing persons reported after storm

The recent storm killed 19 people in all, including one in Nghe An Province, four in Ha Tinh, eight in Quang Binh, six in Quang Nam, with 92 people injured and three still reported missing.

Local governments in central and central highland provinces are moving swiftly to help residents overcome the devastation left in the aftermath of the eleventh cyclonic storm of the year which has caused mass scale damage across the region.

Electric power has been reconnected for most households and sanitary workers are busy cleaning up the muck and debris.

About 40 percent of houses in the central provinces, whose roofs were blown off in the storm, have new roofs. In north central provinces from Quang Binh to Nghe An repair work is in full swing.

Luu Van Tien, Deputy Chief of Road -Traffic Police Department in Ha Tinh Province, on October 18 said that Highway 1A through Xuan Hong and Xuan Lam Communes in Nghi Xuan District is still submerged under water. Water level measures 70 cm, which is causing a traffic gridlock.

Police in Ha Tinh mobilized 100 staff into four groups for round-the-clock duty to prevent vehicles from passing over dangerous roads and guide them to other safer roads.

Sai Gon Giai Phong delegation led by Editor – in – Chief Nguyen Tan Phong arrived in the central province of Thua Thien Hue on October 18. Accordingly, SGGP in coordination with the Red Cross Society in Thua Thien-Hue Province visited and handed over 84 presents totally worth  VND50 million to locals in Phu Loc District in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue. Accordingly, five flattened houses received VND2 million each as financial support, one family whose a part of their house was damaged in the storm received VND1 million and 78 other houses, whose roofs were blown off in the storm, received VND500,000 each.
