A Nigerian man got a life sentence from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court Wednesday for running a heroin trafficking ring while three of his ring members got 20 to 30 years in jail.
Ben Blessed, 31, was sentenced to life.
Anyanwy Chima Stanley, 33, and Ozogu John, 31, both from Nigeria, received 30 and 20 year jail terms, respectively. Stanley was charged of “storing and smuggling heroin” and John “smuggling heroin.”
Vienamese member Pham Thi Thanh Trang, 34, also received 20 year imprisonment for smuggling drugs.
According to the indictment, the Nigerian men came to Vietnam as tourists, then hiring several Vietnamese women including Trang to bring heroin into the country, before transfering it to China.
Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin are eligible to the death sentence.
