Some national assembly deputies questioned why the Ministry has not imported curriculum and textbooks in teaching English, Minister Nha explained that the expensive cost of textbook will prevent poor Vietnamese students from buying it.
He suggested mobilizing Vietnamese experts to design curriculum and compile textbooks for Vietnamese students instead.
Moreover, “imported” curriculum and textbooks include some improper with Vietnam, said Mr. Nha. He announced that curriculum and textbooks will be designed on the alignment with the Common European Framework of Reference for Language standards; accordingly, Vietnamese students’ English proficiency is equal to their European peers.
The project “ Teaching and Learning foreign languages in schools in the period 2008-2020” was approved by the Prime Minister. It aims at implementing English teaching and learning program at all grade building capacity to increase students’ English proficiency by 2025.
The Prime Minister issued a decision on December 22, 2017, to supplement something into the project for the period 2017 - 2025. As per the supplement in the project, preschool students must be taught English by 2020.
Additionally, by 2025, most students from third to sixth grade will be taught English and subjects will be taught in English.
