HCMC plans three-pronged free health checkup plan for residents

Ho Chi Minh City is developing a comprehensive plan to ensure that every resident receives at least one health checkup in 2026.

The approach combines flexible on-site medical examinations, targeted community outreach and a data-driven health management system.

On April 2, Prof. Dr. Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, announced that the department is urgently studying and proposing feasible measures to guarantee that every resident receives at least one health checkup, without staging the program in phases, following the directive of Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Tran Luu Quang at the fifth conference of the Party Committee on April 1.

According to him, the city’s health sector will implement health checkups without administrative boundaries. Residents can choose the most convenient healthcare facility for their checkup, regardless of their place of residence. This approach expands coverage, increases flexibility, and significantly reduces the risk of missing target populations.

Health checkups will also be organized for high-risk groups directly within the community, focusing on individuals requiring regular monitoring, such as the elderly, vulnerable populations, people with non-communicable diseases, high-risk individuals and those needing long-term community health management.

The municipal Department of Health has instructed that these checkups go beyond one-time assessments for information collection, linked to regular monitoring, chronic disease management, health behavior counseling and continuous care at residents’ homes. This will lay the foundation for a shift from manual report-based management to modern, real-time data-driven health governance.

This strategy not only ensures that every resident will receive at least one health checkup in 2026 but also lays the foundation for lifelong health management on a unified data platform. It is an important step toward a modern, flexible, equitable and humane healthcare system, aiming for comprehensive care for all residents, Prof. Dr. Tang Chi Thuong added.
