A press conference to announce the Top 10 Best Practices in 2009 among program models supporting people with disabilities in Vietnam was held March 3 by the East Meets West Foundation (EMWF) and Vietnam Television (VTV).
Recognition of best practice programs is part of a global campaign titled “Life is Beautiful,” which helps raise awareness about the problems of people with disabilities (PWDs) in Vietnam including children and adults with congenital disabilities, landmine victims, Agent Orange survivors and those injured in other accidents.
The programs focus on assisting and supporting people with disabilities in Vietnam in different areas including health, inclusive education, vocational training, job placement, awareness raising of disability issues, capacity buiding for local partners, as well as early detection and prevention of defects.
The Top 10 Best Practices for 2009 was recommended among nearly 50 program models supporting people with disabilities in the country.
Decisions are made based on a set of criteria that include: response to urgent needs, the involvement of local community, sustainability, qualifiable results, effectiveness and the ability to replicate.
Through the campaign, money is raised for disadvantaged individuals with disabilities and the programs which effectively support disabled people in Vietnam.
"The selection of Top 10 Best Practices 2009 is our first step in promoting the most effective solutions in supporting people with disabilities. The next step is a series of communications programs to be launched under the ‘Life is beautiful’ campaign.
These programs will continue to explore and promote more programs effectively supporting people with disabilties in Vietnam as well as connecting the donors with the disadvantaged people in need," said Bach Ngoc Chien, director of Vietnam Television International.
One of the campaign’s main activities is to create a database of 1 million people with disabilities who need help and a database of the 10 best practice models which have been assisting disabled people effectively on the website www.cuocsongvantuoidep.vn.
