According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the average score for the subject was 3.4 points.
Minister Nha said that the education sector has made much effort in upgrading curriculum and methods to improve English teaching and learning quality; however, there has been much to do.
He therefore said it is necessary to make use of foreign language teaching center for schools.
Sai Cong Hong, deputy director of the Quality Control Department at the Ministry of Education and Training, said that in three recent academic years, average score for English was under five nationwide.
Students in big cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang have good scores in English while their peers in provinces in the Red River delta have poor scores. Experts analyzed thoroughly to help the National Foreign Language Steering Boar to develop an effective training strategy for teachers with the aim to improve the subject’s quality.
According to expert Dang Hiep Giang from the Ministry and Nguyen Thi Mai Huu, director of the National Foreign Language Project students learning 10 –year module ( starting learning English in third grade) have higher scores than their peers of 7- year module ( starting learning English in six grade); accordingly, they suggested that children should learn English as soon as possible.
They were fretting about teachers’ quantity and quality especially in disadvantaged regions.
Explaining why Ho Chi Minh City having high scores in English examination with average score of 5.79, Deputy Head of the municipal Department of Education and Training Nguyen Van Hieu said that opening of high quality foreign language teaching center help students in the city to gain good marks in the national examination.
Most of children learn English in 700 foreign language teaching centers after schools except for their needy peers in suburban districts.
Presently, HCMC is thirsty for qualified native speakers. The Department of Education and training is willing to admit qualified native speakers to teach in schools. Moreover, it has developed a policy to train English teacher teams.
Educational experts said teachers should receive training continuously and curriculum should be updated frequently to match society’s requirements. Cooperation between such centers and public schools is needed to create favorable condition for centers’ growth.
