The Central Natural Disaster Relief Fund management, established two years ago, has put in a lot of work to help residents in the central region with practical projects to help them cope with storms and flooding that affects the region annually.
Phan Dien, Chairman of the fund’s management board said that with the support of central and local authorities and many benefactors, they have built more than 30 houses for residents to move into, in times of flooding.
Besides, they have also developed mangrove forests along Hau Loc District in Thanh Hoa Province to fortify the dykes along the seacoast.
They have also identified a resettlement area for people of Dai Loc District in Quang Nam Province and have provided relief to over 5,000 households suffering from damage caused by floods and storms.
However, Dien said that the achievements so far were still very modest compared to the demands of the residents in the central region.
Nguyen Dang Lam, manager of the fund, said that earlier the flood rescue houses and the cultural houses did not prove effective, as many localities had abandoned them.
As a result, the fund management board subsequently decided to build flood rescue houses in the same building with a school or health clinic. At present, 22 houses are operating effectively.
The fund management board will focus on training residents with skills to cope with natural disasters instead of concentrating on after disaster management. They will also develop forest projects along coastal areas of Thanh Hoa and Quang Tri provinces this year.
