New cracks have been found on the spillway of Ta Trach Irrigation Works in the upper reaches of Huong River in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, causing much concern to local people with rainy season fast approaching.
Phan Thanh Hung, Head of the provincial Department for Flood and Storm Prevention and Dyke Management, has asked the investor to thoroughly examine the spillway, repair the cracks and fortify the main dam by August 30.
Meanwhile, Tran Kim Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Province, said that the cracks are not dangerous and will not affect the safety of the irrigation work.
Local authorities are working with the investor on measures to fortify and secure the spillway before the onset of the rainy season, he said.
Earlier in 2011, cracks had also occurred on the right side of the Ta Trach Irrigation Works, which was under construction at that time. The cracks were blamed for changes in the strata.
Construction of the Ta Trach Irrigation Works started in 2005 at a cost of VND3.5 trillion (US$165 million) from Government bonds, with reservoir capacity of 509 million cubic meters.
