Sixteen provinces in the country reported 64 outbreaks of bird flu, according to the Department of Animal Health on February 19.
Provinces affected are Dak Lak, Long An, Kon Tum, Tay Ninh, Ca Mau, Khanh Hoa, Quang Ngai, Nam Dinh, Phu Yen, Lao Cai, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Can Tho and Vinh Long.
Can Tho City experienced 700 infected poultry. Nearly 13,000 poultry was found infected and disposed of in seven communes in Tam Binh, Vung Liem, and Tra On Districts in Vinh Long Province.
Transmission of the virus comes from chicken smuggled through China border and free range flocks of poultry in the southwest border areas.
Testing of live poultry in 147 markets in 44 provinces revealed that 6 percent of poultry sold is positive for the A/H5N1 virus. About 60 percent of the markets tested revealed to sell some form of infected poultry.
More than 650-infected waterfowls tested positive for A/H5N1 and were disposed of in Cam Quang and Cam Hoa communes in the Ha Tinh Province.
Two farms in the Dong Nai Province lost 7,500 poultry due to infection. These farms belonged to Nguyen Nang Hoa in the Lam San Commune, Cam My District and Tran Van Dan in Ho Nai 3 Commune, Trang Bom District.
The Cam My District authorities distributed 4,000 vaccinations and 400 liters of disinfectant.
Quang Ngai Province supplied more than 600,000 vaccinations to its districts. The province was asked to vaccinate one million poultry by March.
A farm in the outskirts of the central province experienced a large outbreak in which 2,300 poultry was found infected and disposed.
