About 1,000 overseas Vietnamese from around the world, who returned home to celebrate the Lunar New Year, attended a program called Xuan Que Huong (Spring in the Homeland) in Hanoi on February 6.

At the event, President Nguyen Minh Triet highlighted the country’s achievements in 2009, and said the progress was made thanks to the whole nation’s determination, efforts and solidarity, and important contributions from overseas Vietnamese communities.
The president said he was proud that overseas Vietnamese continued to care about and maintain their Vietnamese spirit and character and love the country while ceaselessly trying to build a solid community and help each other.
More and more overseas Vietnamese have returned home to work in fields like science, technology, education, culture and society, participate in charity and humanitarian activities, and help local people when they face difficulties due to natural disasters and epidemic diseases, he said.
President Triet said overseas Vietnamese’s love and kind acts towards the homeland affirm the fact that overseas Vietnamese communities are an inseparable part of the Vietnamese nation and a part of its strength.
The program, the first in a series of planned celebrations of the 1,000th founding anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, was jointly organized by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the People’s Committee of Hanoi and Vietnam Television.
The event, which was held at the Bao Son Paradise Park, was televised live on Vietnam Television.
