VN-Index loses ground on CPI data

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index tumbled on March 24 as investors’ confidence drained after CPI data for March was announced.

The gauge of 282 companies and five mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange sapped 1.35 percent, or 6.32 points, to close at 461.32 points.

On the index, 83 stocks advanced, 129 retreated, while 75 treaded water.

Trading on the city bourse fell by 18 percent in volume and 24 percent in value over the previous trading session as 27.6 million shares changed hands at a value of VND617 billion.

Saigon Securities Inc. (SSI), the country’s largest brokerage, was the most active share in volume for the second day with 1.71 million shares changing hands.

Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industrial and Trade or Vietinbank (CTG) continued tagging along with 1.08 million shares.

It was followed by Na Ri Hamico Mineral Joint Stock Company (KSS) with 1.07 million shares.

Petroleum Pipeline and Tank Construction Joint Stock Company (PXT) ripped 7.78 percent to close at VND8,300.

Tuong An Vegetable Oil Joint Stock Company (TAC) burnt 5.52 percent to VND27,400.

Ba Ria - Vung Tau House Development Joint Stock Company (HDC), Vinacafé Bienhoa Joint Stock Company (VCF), and Hai Van Cement Joint Stock Company (HVX) all contracted 5 percent to VND28,500, VND47,500, and VND5,700 respectively.

Hamico Mineral Group (KSH) recovered 4.91 percent to close at VND34,200.

House Vietnam Joint Stock Company (NVN) rallied for two straight days, building up 4.89 percent to VND23,600.

Sao Mai Construction Corporation (ASM) emerged for seven consecutive days, soaring 4.87 percent to VND32,300.

The smaller in the north also dropped as the Hanoi’s HNX-Index corrected 0.88 percent, or 0.83 points, to close at 93.28 points. Trading volume improved over the previous trading session as 32.3 million shares worth VND494.49 billion changed hands.

Meanwhile, the UPCoM-Index of unlisted shares slightly fell 0.15 points to 37.65. Trading volume doubled the previous session as a total of 323,200 shares changed hands at a value of VND4.21 billion.
