The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO) in Vietnam yesterday celebrated the 35th World Food Day and the 70th anniversary of establishment of FAO in the northern province of Lao Cai.
Vietnam has made efforts to move toward its 2020 goal of forming a social protection system covering the entire population to ensure people have jobs, a minimum income and social insurance. It would also support people with difficulties, such as children with special needs, low-income households and those with disabilities to ensure access to basic social services.
As per FAO’s report, more than 1 billion people in the world are living in poverty line and many of them lack food.
Representatives from MARD confirmed Vietnam’s economic is relying on agriculture to ensure food security to eliminate hunger and poverty from which to start modernization and industrialization process.
The country now has around 10 million households living on rice field with more than 30 million laborers in the agriculture sector. The sector has contributed 20 percent in the whole country’s GDP. From a country which had to import food, Vietnam is becoming one of leading export nation in the world in rice, cashew and rubber.
The country's poverty rate fell from 58 percent in 1993 to 6 per cent in 2014.
