Speaking at the ceremony to open the tunnel, Deputy Minister of Transport Le Dinh Tho said that the tunnel was the country’s key construction in the form of Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT).
Before, the Ministry had built tunnels Ca and Co Ma in the central provinces of Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa in the form of BOT.
The Cu Mong tunnel is the third-longest underground road passageway in Vietnam. The country’s longest tunnel is 6.3-kilometer Hai Van tunnel, connecting the central province of Thua Thien – Hue and Da Nang City while the second-longest one is 4.1-kilometer Deo Ca Tunnel in the south-central province connecting Phu Yen Province and Khanh Hoa Province.
Construction of the tunnel kicked off in September 2015 with total cost of VND4 trillion ($172.4 million), the tunnel pair includes two underground road with each two-lane road having the maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour for both carriageways.
