Stocks tumble most in one month

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index put an end to its four-day winning streak, sinking at the steepest pace in more than one month on May 5 as several blue-chip stocks dropped due to profit-taking.

The shares of 284 companies and five mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange collapsed 1.5 percent, or 7.29 points, to close at 479.29 points.

Among the index members, 70 advanced, 136 declined, while 83 remained unchanged.

Trading volume on the city bourse slightly improved over the previous trading session as 21.9 million shares changed hands at a value of VND534.27 billion.

Saigon Securities Inc. (SSI), the country’s largest brokerage, led the list of most active shares in volume with 1 million shares changing hands.

It was followed by Tay Bac Minerals Investment Joint Stock Company (KTB) with 965,300 shares traded.

Vietnam Commercial Joint Stock Export Import Bank or Eximbank (EIB) ranked third with 692,900 shares changing hands.

Idico Urban & House Development Joint Stock Company (UIC) plunged 12.21 percent to VND11,500. The company will pay dividends for the year 2010 to its current shareholders at a ratio of 15 percent in cash since May 24.

Bibica Corporation (BBC) slipped 5.26 percent to VND14,400. The company asked the State Securities Commission of Vietnam to allow it to issue 100,000 shares for its key employees.

Savimex Corporation (SAV) and Thien Nam Trading Import Export Joint Stock Company (TNA) both slashed 5 percent to VND32,300, and VND19,000 respectively.

Tay Ninh Rubber Joint Stock Company (TRC) restored 4.93 percent to VND49,000.

Ben Tre Forestry & Aqua Product Import Export Joint Stock Company (FBT) climbed for ten consecutive trading sessions, adding up 4.88 percent to VND8,600.

Manulife Progressive Fund (MAFPF1) rebounded 4.76 percent to VND4,400.

The Hanoi’s HNX-Index of the smaller in the north continued losing 1.31 percent, or 1.09 points, to close at 82.1 points. Trading volume increased over the previous trading session as 22.8 million shares worth VND288 billion changed hands.

Meanwhile, the UPCoM-Index of unlisted shares trimmed 0.72 points to 34.93 points this morning. A total of 132,500 shares changed hands at a value of VND2 billion as of 11:10 am local time.
