According to Soc Trang Red Cross leaders, more than 85 percent of mangrove apple trees planted on an area of 45 hectares of saline forest in Tran De District’s Trung Binh Commune since 2012 to date are alive and growing healthily.
Nguyen Hoang Phong, vice chairman of Soc Trang Red Cross Association, said that the project which was sponsored by UK Premier Oil Company has helped to increase the area of protection forest in Tran De District, prevent soil erosion caused by rising sea levels, help protect the environment, ecosystems and reduce negative impacts of climate change as well as raise awareness of environmental protection among local people.
In addition, the project has also provided short-term jobs for more than 50 local residents.
In 2015, Soc Trang province will continue to expand 100,000 saplings of mangrove apple trees on an area of 20 hectares with a total cost of VND1.6 billion.
