According to local farmers, a hectare of acacia hybrid trees bring the income of VND100 million ($4,399) after five years of planting while rose myrtle plants give harvest after a year with quintuple earnings.
After earning VND200 million from selling acacia hybrid trees in 2015, Mr. Pham Thanh Nhan in Quang Trach district hired local residents to go up hills, find wild myrtle plants and pull them up to plant in over 2.5 hectares.
One year later, he started reaping the first crop with 20,000 plants and processing plants paid him VND15,000-20,000 a kilogram.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Quang Binh said that Sim Son Company from Phu Quoc island district, Kien Giang province, attending a sustainable development project for the poor in Quang Binh, has assisted local farmers with rose myrtle planting technique and consumed their products.
The company has promised to buy 100 percent of the fruit in the first crop and maintained stable purchase in following years with prices equal to or higher than market price. In return, farmers must commit to not using chemicals and picking and preserving the fruit in a right process to ensure food safety.
