Vietnam’s first container scanning system, worth US$9.6 million, was put into operation at Cat Lai port, Ho Chi Minh City on April 2, the Vietnam’s Customs Department said.
The scanning system is expected to help customs offices detect products which do not match shipping manifests and reduce smuggling, trade fraud and illegal transporting of products, said the department.
The scanner will also help to speed up the handling of containers, reducing storage costs for businesses and easing the building up of goods at the port.
The system, which uses X-ray technology, was donated by the Japanese government.
Cat Lai port is one of the country’s largest container ports, and handles almost 45 percent of the total number of containers entering and leaving the country.
