The Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute held a solemn ceremony in Can Tho city on January 29, aiming to receive the first class independence medal and mark it’s 38th anniversary of establishment and development.

Attending at the ceremony was State President Truong Tan Sang, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat, Secretary of Can Tho city Party Committee Tran Thanh Man, representative leaders of ministries, departments, locals in the area of Mekong Delta and staffs, officials of the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute.
Dressing the ceremony, State President Truong Tan Sang affirmed that the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute has played an important role in leading the Mekong Delta to be the heart of the rice producing region of the country and Vietnam has become one of the world’s leading rice exporting country in previous years.
With major role, the Institute should prove itself to become the South East Asia’s leading research center in the fields of science and technology, high quality technology, developing seed production and others.
On the same day, President Sang visited and worked with the Southwest region Steering Committee. Speaking at the meeting, he stressed that in the next times, the Mekong Delta region needs to implement economic restructuring, especially, agricultural restructuring, increasing rice, fish and fruit produce and others.
President Sang suggested local authorities should have necessary solutions and sharing experiences of neighbor countries about dealing with climate change.
In the time ahead, hundreds of US$ billion will be invested into the Mekong Delta region in dealing with climate change and raising sea water level.
Besides, President Truong Tan Sang also asked locals should focus on administrative reform to attract investment capital sources, train human resource and develop science and technology sector.
The Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute was established in 1977. Over past 38 years, the rice research institute has get outstanding achievements such as researching and applying successfully OM rice seed in rice production process in Mekong Delta region.
The Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute contributed to increase the southern region’s rice production up to 25 million tons per a year, bringing Vietnam becomes one of the world’s largest rice producing regions.
