Markets open week on an upswing

The shares of 239 companies and four mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange opened week on bright note June 21, reinforcing investors’ confidence.

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index rose 3.57 points, or 0.7 percent, to close at 514.75 points.

Of the index, 134 stocks gained, 62 fell, while 47 remained unchanged. Around 48.6 million shares, worth more than VND1.38 trillion, changed hands.

Viet Nam Tanker Joint Stock Company (VTO) was the most active stock in volume with more than 1.86 million were traded. The company’s shares closed up 4.8 percent to VND13,100.

Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Bank or Sacombank (STB) came next with 1.84 million shares, followed by Petroleum Industrial & Civil Construction Joint Stock Company (PXI) with 1.47 million shares.

Meca Vneco Investment and Electricity Construction Joint Stock Company (VES), which climbed the daily maximum allowed limit of 5 percent to VND27,300, led the winners on the city bourse.

Next came Cuong Thuan Investment Corporation (CTI), which advanced 4.98 percent to VND33,700, and Viet - Han Corporation (VHG), which added up 4.97 percent to trade at VND33,800.

Idico Urban and House Development Joint Stock Company (UIC) lost 4.84 percent to close at VND41,300.

Materials - Petrolium Joint Stock Company (COM) gave up 4.39 percent to land at VND54,500.

Meanwhile, the northern bourse also gained as the Hanoi’s HNX-Index advanced 0.66 points, or 0.4 percent, to 164.01 points. Trading volume reached more than 43.2 million shares, valuing VND1.38 trillion. Foreign investors continued net selling for the second consecutive trading session, worth around VND2.3 billion.

The UPCoM-Index of the unlisted shares rose 0.29 points to 46.36 points as of 11:30 am local time. A total of 154,587 shares were traded at VND3.5 billion.

Globally, Hong Kong’s Hang Sheng index jumped 2.84 percent. China’s Shanghai Composite index rose 2.79 percent. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index advanced 2.43 percent.

Dow Jones Industrial Average index gained 0.16 percent, or 16.47 points, to 10,450.64. The S&P 500 index inched up 0.13 percent.
