In an effort to remove the European Commission's yellow card – a warning given to nations at risk of being deemed uncooperative in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Deputy Prime Minister TrInh Dinh Dung has urged the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and relevant agencies especially coastal municipal and provincial people’s committees to put the fight against IUU fishing as top priority.
Regarding illegal offshore fishing management in foreign marine waters, the Deputy Prime Minister assigned the Ministry to work with the National Steering Committee on IUU fishing prevention and the Ministry of Defense on solutions and to stop illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in other countries’ waters.
The Ministry of Public Security will carry out probes and impose harsh penalties on organizations and individuals that lead Vietnamese fishermen to illicitly fish in other countries’ waters. Criminal charged will be imposed on some specific cases to deter other people from committing the crime.
Concerning the supervising systems of offshore fishing boats, the Ministry of Finance will undertake the task in this July and people’s committees in 28 coastal cities and provinces will install these equipment.
