In its document to directors of departments of health and public and private hospital managers, the Ministry ordered to provide newborns with vitamin K which is vital for babies.
According to the Ministry’s guidance, group 1 is newborns weighing over 1,5 kilogram, they will be injected 1mg of vitamin K1; group 2 is babies under or equal to 1,500g, they will receive a shot of 0.5 mg of vitamin K1. Infants must be given Vitamin K shots at birth, said the Ministry.
Through surveillance in localities and reports, the Ministry found out many medical clinics have not strictly administered injection of vitamin K for newborns at birth resulting in some babies suffering intracranial hemorrhage due to late onset of vitamin K deficiency.
Lately, the National Children Hospital in Hanoi received three newborns with intracranial hemorrhage because of vitamin K deficiency.
