HCMC held a solemn ceremony on the morning of April 29, to mark the 37th anniversary of the liberation of the south and National Reunification (April 30) as well as the 126th anniversary of International Labour Day (May 1).

Former Secretary-general Le Kha Phieu, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, City Party Chief Le Thanh Hai were among the VIPs attending the ceremony.

Addressing the ceremony, Le Hoang Quan, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, reviewed the immortal lesson and strategic importance of the military offensive and uprising of the people of South Vietnam which led to the Great Spring Victory in 1975. This historical event ended the resistance war for national independence, with the liberation of the south and national reunification and opened a new chapter in national history.

The speeches delivered by Chairman Quan portrayed the victory of the resistance war against US aggression as a convergence of various factors, such as the participation of the entire nation in a just war and the sound and creative revolutionary guidelines of the Party. Vietnam combined the strengths of the nation in that era, and enhanced international solidarity to create the strongest possible force to defeat the foreign invaders.

The speech emphasised the need to promote the revolutionary traditions and the national spirit of solidarity, as well as reject distorted arguments discounting the value and significance of the historic event.

They were victories of trust and justice, the results of long and hard struggle with great sacrifice of people across the country under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
