HCMC: Bus fares increase from 1st January 2011

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport on December 14 decided to increase bus fares by VND1,000 from the first day of January 2011. The price of a ticket for all routes, less than 31 km, will be VND4,000.

Moreover, monthly vouchers will be replaced with a book of 60 tickets, which are just available to students. They will cost VND84,000 ($4).

While the other type of monthly vouchers, a book of 30 tickets will cost VND90,000, for the price of a VND4,000 ticket.

Tran Quang Phuong, head of the department says that the increase in price is due to higher fuel costs and basic salary increases.

Moreover, statistics supplied by the department state, that in 2008, the city had to subsidise the bus service sector by over VND625 billion ($32 million).
