Hanoi was conferred the “City for Peace” award by the UNESCO during a ceremony held in La Paz, the capital city of Bolivia in 1999 to recognize its contributions to the struggle for peace as well as its development into an active and peaceful city but still keep its specific traditions.
Time flies with changes; so far, the Party Committee, the government and residents in Hanoi have been striving to grow more with the orientation towards to a peaceful world – ground for future development.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said that Hanoi is internationally well-known as a friendly and safe destination with cultural diversity.
Party Chief in Hanoi Hoang Trung Hai, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung, UNESCO’s Assistant Director General for External Relations Firmin Edouard Matoko, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Vietnam Michael Croft and representatives of ministries, agencies and Hanoians attended the event.
Giving the City for Peace” award twenty years ago, Firmin Edouard Matoko said that he believed Hanoi will be accepted to join UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
Also at the ceremony, representatives released white doves — pigeons and participated in a march around Hoan Kiem lake.
